Middle School Career Exploration

  • Middle School students in 91ÖÆƬ³§ take a course called College and Career Exploration. TEA has designed this course to:

"help students build career awareness and engage in deep exploration and study of the Texas CTE career clusters to create a foundation for success in high school, possible postsecondary studies, and careers. The career development process is unique to every person and evolves throughout one's life. In College and Career Exploration, students use decision-making and problem-solving skills for individual career and academic planning. Students explore valid, reliable educational and career information to learn more about themselves and their interests and abilities. Students integrate skills from academic subjects, information technology, and interpersonal communication to make informed decisions. This course is designed to guide students through the process of investigating and developing a college and career readiness plan. Students use aptitude and interest inventory assessments, labor market information, software, and other tools available to explore a variety of career paths, especially those in demand. Students begin mapping their anticipated secondary coursework and potential postsecondary experiences that are in alignment with their goals."

Students leave the course with a four-year plan for high school, including academic and CTE courses, and ensuring they will meet graduation requirements. This four-year plan is uploaded to the student information system, which counselors use to create student schedules.

    VITAL LINK

Middle School students are also invited to take part in Vital Link, through the Northeast Tarrant Chamber of Commerce. Each summer, local businesses accept internship applications for interested 8th-grade students. Students gain real-world experience in a variety of businesses. Learn more from the and visit your counselor in the spring for information on how to participate.

Students in middle school may also be eligible to take courses for high school credit.  Most middle schools offer Professional Communications, Technology Applications, and Nutrition and Wellness classes, which are required for graduation. Taking these courses in 8th grade allows students to have time in high school to take courses of interest, allowing them to take part in internships, apprenticeships, in-depth research projects, and student organizations. These activities often lead to dual credit, scholarships, and grants to pay for postsecondary education.

    Health Science P-TECH Academy

Students interested in a career in health science should get involved in Birdville P-TECH Health Science Academy. Interested students will join a cohort in grade 9 and take dual credit courses throughout high school. They will also participate in our popular Clinical Rotations class, during which our students travel to our partner hospital, Medical City, to experience a variety of careers under the health science umbrella, like nursing, radiology, medical billing, and patient care. Students will also prepare for industry-based certification exams, including phlebotomy, EKG, and Patient Care Technician. These certifications allow students to move directly into the workforce. P-TECH graduates will also leave high school with up to 60 college credits through our partner, Tarrant County College. These credits can be applied to nursing school or other health-related degree programs. Contact your middle school counselor for more information.
